There are two areas to plates to decode a '68 Mustang. The First is the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) typically found on the dash as you look into the 68 Mustang from the Passengers side windshield. The second is the the Warranty Plate found on the Drivers door just below the door latch (as seen below).

1968 Warranty Plate

First, let's look at the VIN plate off my 1968 Mustang Fastback:

The VIN is...8T02C199168

So what do all of these crazy numbers mean?

Model Year: The model year of the car. In this case the "8" is for 68 or 1968.

Assembly Plant: Where the  1968 Mustang was built:

R San Jose, CA
T Metuchen, NJ
F Dearborn, MI

The San Jose Plant started Production in July of 1967 followed by Dearborn and Metuchen NJ in August of 1967.

Body Serial: The body style of the Mustang:

Consecutive Unit Number: The production number of the Mustang.

So if we decode the VIN on my Mustang, you will found out that it was made in 1968 in Metuchen, NJ. The Mustang was a Fastback with Bucket seats and a 289 2V. It was number 1199168 to roll off the assembly line.


Now lets look at the Warranty Plate:

So if we decode the Warranty Plate on my Mustang, you will found that it is a Fastback with bucket seats, Diamond Blue exterior, Light Blue and Dark Blue interior trim. My Mustang was born on April 25, 1968 and sold at Jacksonville, FL. It has a 2.79:1 Axel with a C-4 Automatic Transmission.
